3 Simple tips to get your sweat on during your family vacation

Traveling or going on vacation can often wreak havoc on your exercise and diet. You want to enjoy your trip so you indulge and then are upset that you have messed up all of your progress. But, what if I told you could have your cake and eat it too!

Exercising when you’re traveling is really simple! I'll give you three ways to keep moving and exercising when you're traveling, then it’s up to you to implement it!

As you plan your family vacation I want you to consciously plan activities that fit into these three categories. Set apart a designated time to exercise each day. That way you will stay on top of your goals and you won't regret indulging while you're on vacation.

You can still hit the gym when you're traveling

If you're staying in a hotel, going to the gym is one of the easiest things you can do. Most hotels have an on-site gym with treadmills and weights. You can easily fit in some cardio or a weight workout in before you begin a day of sightseeing.

You can even count time in the hotel pool as a workout, as long as you're actually moving around and swimming. Floating does not count here! It's also a great way to spend time with your family and getting your working out in - I love a good two for one!

If you go to a national gym, you have another great alternative for exercising when you're traveling! Before your trip look up the locations of your gym and see if there is a location close to where you're staying. This is a great way to not lose a beat in your workout plan. You'll feel completely at home and will be able to continue with all of your regular workouts. Not having to think about what you can do will take a lot of strain off of yourself. Plus, it will fit into your schedule seamlessly!

If you aren't staying at a hotel with a gym, or don't have a current gym membership, look for a local gym that allows drop-ins. You might even be able to get a short-term guest pass for cheap. If you can get to the gym and workout for a couple minutes every day, you'll be in much better shape when you get home.

Head outside to exercise when you're traveling

If you've been around here for a while, you know living an active lifestyle is important to me. I believe that this tip is the best way to begin your own active lifestyle. If you want to sneak some exercise into your travels, then plan to be outside! Look for outdoor activities you can participate in.

After all, summer is the perfect excuse to be outdoors and enjoy all that nature has to offer.

I love going for hikes when I'm traveling. It's a great family activity, you'll get to enjoy the natural scenery of your destination, oh and you'll burn some calories while you're at it! Win, win, win. Biking is a great outdoor activity for exercising when you're traveling. You can usually rent bikes to ride around town or if you're at the beach, try a recumbent bike on the sand. It's a great way to see the sights and a great workout!

If you can't always go for a big outdoor adventure, you can still find little ways to keep moving. Try walking to dinner; you'll be able to burn a couple of calories while seeing the town! Walking is the perfect sight-seeing exercise. You'll be able to really experience the culture and environment of your destination if you're out on the streets.

Follow a workout video in your room

If you like guided workouts, then workout videos are the perfect way to keep you exercising when you're traveling. It's the perfect substitute for your favorite HIIT or Barre class. You can find just about any type of workout online.

There are a lot of options for online workouts both paid and free. A quick Google search can help you find a workout that's right for you. YouTube also has a lot of great options if you're looking for something to get you through a couple of days while you're on vacation.

Since you're planning ahead to exercise when you're traveling, look up the videos you want to do beforehand. Make sure you have any equipment you might need - a resistance band is a great substitute for weights that you can easily pack in your suitcase! It's also a good idea to make sure you aren't doing a lot of jumping exercises if you'll be in a room above another guest. You wouldn't want to ruin someone else's vacation by jumping around!

I'll share one more tip with you. The best way to live a healthy and active lifestyle is to keep exercising no matter the circumstances. Getting out of the habit is the worst thing you can do for your health and fitness! Don't forget about your nutrition when you're on vacation either! You can read all about that in my post, How you - and your kids - can eat healthy during your family vacation, for some more quick and easy nutrition tips!
