3 Important truths you need to understand for successful New Year’s resolutions
Raise your hand if you’ve set your New Year’s resolutions! I bet you’re so excited about them, but do you know if your excitement can carry you through the next 12 months?
Setting New Year’s resolutions and dreaming about how you want life to be is exciting! It gives our brains a big hit of dopamine! You’ve probably felt it as butterflies in your stomach or even your heart racing a little bit. It feels so good to set goals
The problem is that dreaming about accomplishing goals and doing the work each day to get there are two very different feelings. Dreaming is fun and it feels good. But working isn’t as much fun. It gets boring fast. And that’s why you can’t rely on your excitement to carry you through to next December!
Instead, I want to teach you three important truths you need to understand so that you can achieve your New Year’s resolutions! These truths will help you overcome the hard days and keep pushing toward your goals so that you not only make it to December 2023 but keep your new healthy habits for years!
You can’t rely on other people’s plans
Too many times when we set goals, we look for a pre-made plan that can get us to our goals. Now, I’m all about finding the fastest and smartest way to get where you want to go, but ten times out of ten, doing the exact same thing as someone else isn’t going to work. Because you aren’t them.
I see this all the time with new mamas in my Macros Made Easy program. They’re used to traditional cookie-cutter diets where you get a list of do’s and don’ts and if you follow that to the tee, you’ll get the results you want.
But once you stop sticking to those lists, either because you’re going insane from having to be so strict or because a holiday or celebration came up and you wanted to enjoy it, you lose everything.
This is what happens when you’re living within someone else’s boundaries. Instead, you need to learn and understand what works for you and your life. It’s unrealistic to think that you can be happy sticking to something designed for someone else.
I will never tell you to fit into my boundaries because you are not me! You may not be willing to go to the gym for an hour five days a week, but I love that! And you might love eating salads every day, but that’s not for me!
You have to take the time and energy to discover your own roadmap. Hiring a coach, instead of buying a pre-made program, is a great way to find strategies and tools that will help you reach your goals because you can adapt them to fit you and your needs!
You have to learn how to think from your future self
An essential tool in reaching your new year’s resolutions is learning how to get in touch with your future self. Let me explain this idea a little bit because it’s probably going to be new to you!
There are two versions of you. The Now You and the Future You.
Now You is where you’re at right now, obviously. She might feel broken, frustrated and annoyed that nothing she has tried in the past has worked.
And then, there’s Future You. She has accomplished everything you want to. She knows the way. She knows how to overcome every obstacle that Now You will face because she’s already been there!
Most of us were never taught to look to our future selves for answers, but that’s exactly what we need to do, especially when that dopamine hit wears off!
The reason that this works so well, is because it changes how we view where we’re at! When you hit a bump in the road Now You wants to throw a pity party. Now You says, ‘See I knew you couldn’t do it. I knew you couldn’t eat just one chip. Look, at you. You’ve failed.”
And when you’re stuck in that mindset you can’t move forward.
But, when you stop thinking like Now You, and start thinking like Future You, you’ll have a whole new perspective. Future You knows that this isn’t the end. She can say, “yeah, you fell down, but here’s what you need to do to get back up.”
Future You knows how to fail forward. She knows that every mistake can be a chance for growth and that’s what she chooses.
As you learn to think from your future self instead of your past self, you’ll find that the mistakes and hiccups along the way take you off course for less and less time, until making healthy decisions that lead you toward your goals becomes second nature.
You need to know what success feels like
When you’re setting your health and weight loss goals for the new year, you need to go beyond a number on the scale.
On every single call, I have with potential clients, they can give me an exact number of how much weight they want to lose, or what they want the scale to say. But, they don’t know why they want that to be their goal.
And that’s ok! Most of us weren’t taught to think beyond that! That Now You can only focus on what’s most uncomfortable and what needs to change. That looks like a number on a scale or what size of clothing you’re wearing.
But Future You knows that numbers might get you going but they aren’t going to drive you forever! Future You knows that you can’t cut out the things you love forever. She knows that doing cardio non-stop isn’t going to make you happy. She knows that eventually, you’ll give up on the habits that don’t fit into your life. She wants you to enjoy your health journey!
Future You is focused on answering the questions that make a real difference in your health and life.
What do you want your day to look like?
What do you want your relationships with your family to look like?
How do you think and feel about food?
How do you think and feel about exercise?
How do you think and feel about yourself?
How do you think and feel about alcohol?
Is it easy or difficult to make healthy choices?
When you go beyond just your weight or your size you stop viewing healthy living as a means to an end, or something that you’re only doing until you reach a goal. And you start seeing it as your way of life. You become the healthy person you want to be. You make choices that benefit you because you’re striving for a different life - not a different size!
