Commit now to your nutrition and you’ll live a healthy life forever
How many times have you tried a new diet or a new workout routine? We’ve all been on the healthy living path before, so why can’t we commit and see lasting change? Usually, it’s because we’re looking for a quick fix not a permanent solution.
Healthy living isn’t about losing weight fast. It’s not about becoming a CrossFit champion. Healthy living is about making a daily commitment to do what is best for you. It’s about making the little choice everyday to eat well, move your body, drink water and foster healthy relationships. If you want to live a healthy life now and forever, then you have to make a commitment to it. The following three steps will help you commit to a healthy life for a long time.
Know the real reason you’re committing to your nutrition
Most people embark on a healthy living journey because they want to lose weight. This is an absolutely valid reason to get started, but as you go along your journey you’ll find that weight loss alone won’t hold you to your commitment.
You need a deeper reason to keep you on the healthy living path! Your deep why might be bigger than just yourself. My why, is that I want to be around as long as I possibly can to see my kids grow up and see their kids grow up.
For some people, their deep why is that they don’t want to deal with bigger health issues down the road. It might be that you simply want to be a better example to your friends and family. If your deep why is bigger than just how you look, it’s much easier to push through the rough times.
I use the 5 Why Method to help my clients understand the real reason that they want to commit to a healthy lifestyle. This method helps you dig deep and really get down to what’s driving you toward this goal. It’s a great exercise to use if you can’t seem to get past the physical why.
Take action to live the life you want.
Taking action is by far the hardest part of committing to healthy living! We can plan, plan and plan some more, but if we don’t turn that plan into action, then we will never accomplish our goals!
The best place to start is to create habits that align with your goals. If you want to start eating healthier, you might start by eating more protein. You could take action by having protein at each meal. Once you get in the habit of eating protein at each meal, you can add another habit.
These actions don’t have to be huge, in fact, if they are too big and too overwhelming chances are you won’t stick to them! Healthy living is easier to accomplish if you take a snowball approach to it. Start with some small habit and practice it until it becomes second nature. Then, roll that good habit into another habit and another habit until it all becomes second nature.
If you aren’t sure what actions you need to take, then get help! A nutrition coach can help you create a plan and then hold you accountable to that plan! Having an expert in the field guiding you along the journey will make it easier and faster than if you did it on your own! Don’t be afraid to get help when you need it.
Invite others into your journey
Trying to change your life is hard and trying to fight with your spouse and kids about eating healthy on top of that is too much! You need to get your family, or those closest to you, on board.
They need to understand why you’re making this change because it’s not just affecting you, it’s affecting the whole family! I always recommend getting your partner on board first because you need them to have your back when you take it to your kids.
My client Gail is one of the best examples of this! She told her family what her plan was and asked for their support to accomplish it. Her husband knows that if he wants to eat out, he needs to talk to her about it a day or two in advance so that she can plan for it. Her kids help her cook meals that fit into her plan and from her example, they have even started their own balanced eating plans!
Without the support of her family, Gail would be fighting to stay committed to her nutrition. She would feel frustrated and like everyone was out to bring her down. Instead, she invited her family into her journey and has a great support system!
There is a right and wrong way to bring people into your journey. The wrong way is to force it on them. No one likes being told what to do! The right way is to explain why you made the decision and then invite them to join you.
Obviously, if you have younger kids, they’ll just have to go along with your journey because you’re the one who buys the groceries and prepares the meals. But, if your kids are older, make sure you help them understand how this benefits them. Help them find their own why and then teach them how to make healthy choices for life!
If you do these three things, staying committed to a healthy lifestyle doesn’t have to be an uphill battle all the time! Sure, you’ll hit times where it’s harder than others, but when those moments come, you’ll already have a system to lean on to keep pushing through.
