3 Shocking ways your kitchen is destroying your weight loss progress

Have you ever walked into your kitchen ready to grab a healthy snack and no matter where you look all you can find is junk food? It used to happen to me too, until I took the time to look around my kitchen and figure out what wasn’t working. I wanted to eat healthy and I needed my kitchen to reflect that.

I want to share with you three of the biggest flaws I found in my kitchen so you can look around and see if your kitchen is getting in the way of your weight loss!

My pantry was filled with junk food

I’m a mom, my kids love mac and cheese, goldfish and fruit snacks as much as the next kid! I constantly had all the kid essentials stocked in my pantry for easy snacking and meals. I was rocking it on the mom front with these foods, but I wasn’t doing myself any favors. Anytime I was feeling hungry, I would go to the pantry and grab a handful of goldfish or a fruit snack. I would eat it and walk away just as hungry, so I would be back 10 minutes later to do the exact same thing.

I didn’t have any snacks in my pantry - or my fridge for that matter - that were nutritionally filling for me! I didn’t realize that having a million quick carb options wasn’t helpful! I figured the faster, the better.

Now that I know I need better, more filling foods, I’ve restocked my pantry and fridge with foods that keep me full! I love having yogurt, nuts, deli meats and string cheese all on hand. I know when I go to my pantry or fridge there are options there for me and my kids. They can still be quick, but they are also going to fill me up! No more endless munching!

My plates and bowls were too big

One of the biggest problems I see as a nutritionist -- and something I went through myself was overeating. Our plates and bowls are huge and we don’t even realize it!

Have you ever measured out a serving of cereal? Most cereals are less than a cup, but that looks like nothing inside of our bowls, so we keep pouring. Our big dishes are leading to a distorted sense of portions.

The problem here is very simple: not understanding serving sizes leads to overeating and overeating leads to weight gain.

You don’t have to throw out all your dishes to get a handle on portion sizes. Instead, invest in a food scale and some measuring cups and start measuring your food. When you start measuring your food you’ll be able to account for what you’re eating. What you measure you can manage! You’ll finally be able to see if you’re eating a balanced diet. If you’re not, you’ll know what needs to change!

My food wasn’t prepared ahead of time

This kind of goes back to my first problem, but I didn’t have any go-to foods to eat when I was hungry. I didn’t want to prepare a huge meal when all I needed was a quick snack! Anything that was quick, was also processed and only added inches to my waist.

To overcome this obstacle does take some time and preparation, but I can tell you that it is 100% worth it!

The first thing you need to do is create a plan! Plan out a few of your favorite snacks. Make sure you include a variety because if you get tired of eating the same snack every time you’ll be back in the same predicament! Once you know what you want to have on hand, go buy it! When you’re back home with your groceries take the time to prep all of your snacks!

Seriously, I want you to create “pre-packaged” snacks so that you can grab them and go any time! I love having all of my foods prepared ahead of time because when I’m in the moment creating my own veggie platter sounds so daunting. But if all I have to do is grab a bag of pre-cut veggies out of the fridge and dish out some dip, it’s more enticing!

Do whatever you need to, to make eating in the future easier! If you take a little more time at the beginning to prep all of your food, you’ll actually save time down the line. You won’t torment yourself about what to eat or feel bad about eating something you wish you hadn’t because you’ve already determined what you’re going to eat and it’s something you can be happy with!
