Stop setting new years resolutions and start setting goals you’ll actually achieve in 2020

How many years have you set a new year’s resolution to “be healthier” or “lose weight.” It seems like a noble new year’s resolution, but how many years have you actually followed through with it?

Most people don’t follow through with their new year’s resolutions because it requires a big sweeping change without much of a plan. Setting goals, creating a road map to those goals and getting support will help you actually achieve what you set out to!

Change your mindset to being a goal achiever

If you want to accomplish your goal, the first thing you absolutely must do is get your mindset right. You need to believe - in your mind, heart and soul - that you can accomplish whatever you set out to do.

Believing in your self sounds like it would be easy, but it can be so easy to give in to negative thoughts or temptation when you’re in the trenches of accomplishing your goals. The best way to combat those thoughts and feelings is to have the practice to build your mindset strength back up.

Whenever I start to get down on myself and think that I can’t do something, I pull out my journal and do this exercise.

I write down all the negative thoughts that come to mind on one side of my paper. Then, I write “I am” statements to counteract those negative statements on the other side of the paper.

For example:

I’m too lazy to track my macros. → I am worth the time it takes to track my macros

Or

I am too far gone to get where I want to be again. → I am beautiful and deserve to feel like it.

Doing this practice will help you keep your mindset positive so that you continue to accomplish goals even when you start to doubt yourself.

Create an action plan

A goal without a plan is just a dream.

We all know this. Once you know what you’re working on, you need a roadmap to reach that goal.

I like to write down milestones I want to hit along the way. It’s important to recognize those little milestones because they offer us a chance to celebrate on the way to our bigger goal. What we celebrate we replicate.

In order to replicate those small successes, you need to know what you’re doing. List everything you need to do to reach each milestone.

Say your goal is to lose 20 pounds. Maybe you want to celebrate at every 5 pounds lost. Your road map would look like this:

5 lbs lost! → 10 lbs lost!! → 15 lbs. lost!!! → 20 lbs lost!!!!

Under each mini-goal, write down what you’re going to do on a daily basis to reach your goal.

5 lbs lost

  • Plan meals

  • Exercise for 30 minutes a day

  • Eat more protein

Remember that to reach your next mini-goal you’re going to have to increase what you’re doing - even if your goal isn’t weight loss related. To be better you have to do better!

Once you have a plan on how to reach your goal, you will be able to crush your goal as long as you stick to it!

Get support!

Sometimes having a plan isn’t enough to reach your goals. Most people need help reaching their goals, either because they don’t know how to perform the steps that are needed or because they simply need support!

If you need help reaching your goals, don’t be afraid to reach out to experts! It’s important to constantly continue educating ourselves and who better to teach you than an expert?

If you’re looking for support, then you have lots of options! Ask close friends or family to support you! Hire a coach who can encourage and teach you; 2-for-1! Join a support group either in-person or online!

Getting help is not a sign of weakness, but a sign of strength. If you want to reach your goals in 2020, then don’t be afraid to dream big and work hard!
