3 Spooktacular mindset tricks to avoid eating all of your kids’ Halloween treats
It’s Halloween, you’ve taken the kids trick-or-treating. You’ve handed out all of your candy, turned off the porch light and locked the door. You’re done for the night. You sit down at the table and look to the right. You see your kid’s Halloween candy sitting there. It’s almost spilling over, there is so much candy. You could have just a piece right? A piece won’t hurt.
You’re 100% right. A piece of candy isn’t going to hurt you. What will hurt you, is binging on candy for the next few hours while you sit and watch TV. It’s so easy to go from one piece of candy to 100 in one sitting! I know, because I’ve done it too!
The best way to not eat candy isn’t to hide it or deprive yourself of it. The best way is to change your mindset! When you’ve changed your mindset and know you can control yourself in any situation, then you’ll have the skills needed to be successful. You won’t have to worry about not being able to control yourself anymore.
These three mantras are my Halloween mindset trick to enjoying myself without going overboard.
I don’t need to deprive myself of Halloween treats
First and foremost you need to know that you don’t need to deprive yourself in order to be healthy. When you have a deprivation mindset it can create mental health issues and can cause negative food relationships.
Instead of thinking “I can’t,” I want you to change your mindset to “I can enjoy without gorging.” One or two pieces of candy really won’t mess up your entire health journey, I promise!
I’ve planned for this.
While I don’t want you to deprive yourself of a treat on Halloween, I do want you to have a plan! Planning which treat you want to eat after the kids are in bed allows you to enjoy it without guilt.
If you know you’re going to want a Twix bar, then you can eat fewer carbs and fats during the day to account for that candy bar. If you’re a macro tracker, add that Twix bar into your macros before you even eat it. Then, you can see what you need to eat for the rest of the day to hit your macro goals.
When you make a plan, you still get to enjoy whatever foods make you happy and stay on track with your goals. Life and nutrition are all about balance!
This isn’t the end of my health journey.
Let’s say you went a little overboard and didn’t stick to your plan. Maybe you ate popcorn, candy corn, caramel apples, and that Twix bar. That doesn’t mean that you’re done with this healthy living thing. This was just one day out of hundreds on your journey!
The absolute best thing you can do after a day like this is to forgive yourself and move on. You do not need to beat yourself up or punish yourself for having a bad day. Start new at your next meal. Get back on track as soon as you can.
Changing your mindset from “It’s all over now” to “It’s ok, I can do this” is one of the best things you’ll ever do for your health. If you stay on track 90% of the time and you splurge 10% you’ll still see progress. I am more concerned with your mindset being in the right place than I am with you “messing up.” Because if you can change your mindset you can overcome any obstacle in your way.
