3 simple self-evaluation questions that can propel you towards your health and weight loss goals
We’re ending the first quarter of 2021, and I want you to take a few minutes to look back over the last three months and evaluate if you’re closer to your goals than you were when you started. Losing weight and being healthier isn’t a sprint, it’s a marathon and sometimes, when you’re in the middle of that marathon it can feel like you’ll never make it to the end. Sometimes, the best thing to do when you’re feeling exhausted is to take stock of what is actually going on.
There is a method that I like to use in my own life, and with my kids and their goals, called the compliment sandwich. The compliment sandwich will help you evaluate what areas you’re succeeding in and what areas might need more work.
When we take some time to reflect on what’s working and what isn’t we can actually make changes and redirect ourselves towards success. Before we start Q2, take some time to ask yourself these questions!
Question 1: What did I do well?
First and foremost, you need to acknowledge the things that you did well! Did you eat a veggie every day? WIN! Did you drink more water? WIN! Acknowledge those wins, mama!
In one of my favorite books, Atomic Habits, the author James Clear says, “Every action you take is a vote for the type of person you want to become. No single instance will transform your beliefs but as the votes build up, so does the evidence of your new identity.”
I absolutely love this quote because it teaches us that every small action we take towards the person we want to become is crucial! Every time you make a healthy decision, you’re one step closer to being a healthy person!
This is why you need to recognize and celebrate every small thing that you do well! What we celebrate we replicate. What we replicate, we achieve.
Question 2: What could I have done better?
The second question, “What could I have done better?” is a really important question to ask yourself because despite our best efforts sometimes we fall short. What I want you to remember as we talk about this, that that failure isn’t a reflection on you. Failure is a way to learn and grow.
It’s actually very important that you are able to call yourself out when you make a mistake or on a path that isn’t working. If you set a New Years Resolution to go to the gym, but you’ve only been there once all year, that means you aren’t keeping your promises to yourself. And that’s not ok.
All too often we find excuses that let us off the hook. The problem is that it’s still an excuse that’s stopping you from being the person you want to be. You need to be able to call out what isn’t working and then find a solution that will work for you.
Going back to our working out example. If you said, you’d wake up at 4:30 a.m. and hit the gym every day, but you keep hitting snooze, then that’s not working for you and it’s time to re-evaluate and make a shift.
When you ask, “What could I have done better” you have to be willing to change your behavior to actually do better! Don’t give in to excuses. Take control of your life and make the change you need to make.
Question 3: What was the most fun?
Have you ever asked yourself what was the most fun about your weight loss journey? Probably not! I know that for me this was a crazy thought at first too. But, I use the compliment sandwich with my kids, usually after a game, and I always ask them, “What was the most fun?” because my kids are playing sports because it’s supposed to be fun!
Mama, if you are dreading eating, exercising, and all the other parts of a healthy lifestyle, then you aren’t going to stick with it! Weight loss programs work when they fit into your life and become part of your lifestyle, which means you must enjoy it!
As we learn to enjoy our journey, it becomes part of who we are, not just something we do to “be healthy.” As you cast those votes, like we talked about earlier, they become a part of you. Now, you aren’t just losing weight and then going back to your old habits. You’ve changed who you are so that you don’t find yourself in this place again! That’s what creates a sustainable weight loss program!
So what was the most fun? Was it trying a new recipe? What about going to that yoga class with your best friend? We are allowed to have fun! Yes, even you, mama! Don’t let your responsibilities steal the joy from your life!
