Macro tracking isn’t a normal diet. It’s not meant to give you a quick fix. It’s not meant to solve your short-term problems. Macro tracking is meant to teach you about food and how to eat to fuel your life! Because macro tracking is a lifestyle change, not just a diet, a lot of my clients ask if they will need to meticulously track their food forever.

The short answer to that question, is no! You won’t have to weigh and measure your food for the rest of your life because macro tracking is a tool to help you understand portion sizes and the amount of food YOU need.

I’ve been macro tracking for six years, and while I do take the time to measure and track my food most of the time, there are a lot of times where I can eat and stay on track without measuring each bite!

Macro tracking is going to be a tool that you use to change your life forever. When you work with me I want you to unlearn a lot of your old destructive eating habits and replace those with knowledge on what foods fuel you.

Replace restriction with food freedom

The first thing you need to unlearn, in order to have a healthy life, is that there are no good and bad foods. Labeling things good or bad leads to restriction. And restriction is the number one reason that people give up on healthy living!

Instead of saying you can’t eat this or that for the rest of your life, change your mindset to, I can eat this as long as I’m accountable for it. You can eat a brownie as long as you know how it fits into your nutrition that day. If you eat a brownie, which is high in carbs and fat, you’ll want to eat other foods throughout the day that are lower in carbs and fat to balance it out.

With macro tracking, you’ll have macronutrient goals to hit every day. It’s helpful to know what those numbers are so that you can choose foods that fit into them. That one brownie doesn’t mean you can’t eat any more carbs for the rest of the day; it just means you’ll have to eat slightly lower carbs that one day.

Once you learn how to balance these numbers yourself, you don’t have to track every single thing! We use macro tracking as the tool to teach you what balance looks like. Once you have broken free from the all-or-nothing mindset, you are able to make better decisions intuitively!

Learn about portions and what works for you

Not a lot of people understand what portion sizes look like. Do you know what 4 oz of chicken looks like? If you don’t know what a portion looks like, then how could you expect yourself to eat the “right” amount?

When you begin to measure your food, you are able to physically see and understand what a portion looks like. This is why measuring your food is an important part of your nutrition education! Over time, you’ll be able to look at a piece of chicken and know roughly what 4 oz looks like, once you get to that point, it’s much easier to eat without weighing your food.

The other thing you learn from macro tracking is that a typical portion may not be what you need. You may need more or you may need less! Most people aren’t getting the right amount of protein in their diets. If you fall under that category, then you may need more than that 4 oz of chicken!

When you’re paying attention to what you’re eating and other health factors (exercise, weight, sleep) then you’re able to judge how much food you need. If you’re running a marathon, you’re going to need more carbs than when you’re sitting behind your desk all day. Learning to know what nutrients you need and how much will help you lead a healthy life.

Macro tracking builds a foundation for balanced eating and gets rid of food guilt

We all want to eat healthily, but “eating healthy” is a subjective term. To some people that means exclusively eating whole foods and nothing else. For me, eating healthy means eating foods that help my body and my mind.

We absolutely need to eat the foods that are “good” for us, but that doesn’t mean we have to only eat those things! Sometimes, we want those Oreos or that bag of chips. We can enjoy those things, as long as we do it within reason. A balanced diet is good for our bodies and our minds.

We also don’t have to eat foods that are “good” for us but make us miserable! If you love Brussel sprouts, then you should eat them! But if they make you gag, don’t eat them!! Not even for the sake of being healthy! There are so many foods available to us. We can find foods that make us feel good and look good!

The last thing I want you to learn about macro tracking and a balanced diet is that it frees us from the guilt that is associated with eating “bad” foods. How many times have you said, “I’m working out extra hard today so I don’t feel guilty about eating a cupcake later.” or “I’m eating just a salad for lunch so I don’t’ feel bad about eating pizza for dinner.”  It’s absolutely ok, to try to find balance when we’re eating foods that are calorie-dense, but what isn’t healthy is associating guilt with it!

A balanced diet allows us to eat what we want, without feeling bad about it because we are being responsible! We have a plan and we know what eating that cupcake, or pizza will do to our bodies. It’s all about food accountability. And that’s what macro tracking gives to us. It teaches us to be accountable, make a plan, and then enjoy!

If you’re ready to build a foundation for the healthy life you want to live, then let’s talk. Macro tracking can help you lose weight, keep it off, and feel good about the choices you’re making. Macro tracking is going to give you the tools you need to eat intuitively, and smartly, for the rest of your life!
