3 Lessons you can learn during the coronavirus that will impact your life after it’s over
We all know the bad stuff that’s happening because of the coronavirus, but for every negative, there is a positive. During this wait and watch period, we can still be in control of our lives! In fact, this time may be a huge indicator of how we will live out the rest of our lives.
If you want to feel peace and calm again, then you have to make the choices now that will lead to that. We can overcome the physical, mental and emotional turmoil that we may be in now by creating habits that support the life we want to live.
These are just three of the lessons that I’ve already learned from the coronavirus that will help me lead a better life from here on out.
Lesson 1: Your health really is everything
“At least I have my health.” This phrase has never felt more true! Sickness springs upon us when we least expect it and the coronavirus isn’t any different. Just a month ago, the coronavirus wasn’t even a blip on our radar. Now it fills our news feeds.
We’ve learned that caring for our bodies is the best defense we can give ourselves and our families during this time. We’re making greater efforts to drink our water, wash our hands, eat healthy food and exercise.
Before this, I thought the way I was washing my hands was fine, but it’s not! Now that I know better, I can do better and I will forever wash my hands thoroughly!
What if we approached every day with this approach? Once the virus passes, will you still eat foods that boost your immune system? Will you exercise? Take this new understanding you have of your body and continue eating well and exercising after the coronavirus passes.
Lesson 2: Practicing gratitude can keep things in perspective
Change is very difficult to deal with and almost overnight everything changed for us. We were stuck in our homes, our kids weren’t going to school, supplies ran out. It was very stressful. These big changes made it harder to find the good in every day.
But change also helps us be thankful for the little things that we used to take for granted. I NEVER thought we would experience a toilet paper shortage. It was just something that was always available. Now, I’m grateful for every little square!
My kids used to complain about getting up and going to school every day. Now we all miss getting ready for school! My kids miss their teachers and friends. I even miss the hustle of after-school sports.
We’re grateful for those little things we miss now. We’re grateful that we have the ability to hold soccer practice in the yard or batting practice in the garage. Once things get back to normal, we’ll remember these inconveniences and we’ll be more grateful for the everyday things that make us happy or just make our lives easier.
If you haven’t already developed a gratitude practice, do it now. Looking for the good in your day really can change your attitude. It can relieve stress and anxiety. It can even bring more good into your life.
If you practice this while you’re in lockdown, you’ll be able to perfect it and turn it into a habit. This habit will help you not only through this, but through any other hard times to come.
Lesson 3: Slowing down helps us find real happiness
My family is always on the go. All three of my kids play sports, basically year-round. My husband is a firefighter and I run a business. We are busy, busy people and we love it!
However, as we’ve been home without the hustle and bustle of our normal lives, we’ve also learned that it’s amazing to slow down too. We have been able to spend more time together, work together and learn together. It hasn’t been smooth sailing, but it has been amazing to enjoy my family without distractions or busy schedules.
After the quarantine and social distancing lifts, I’ll be right back on the sidelines cheering my kids on as they play, but we will definitely take more time to slow down and spend time together as a family.
