What’s the real reason you want to lose weight?
Weight loss is too often viewed as a vain pursuit. People assume that we lose weight or get fit just to look better, but as I’ve taken my own journey to lose weight, and as I’ve helped other people on their journeys, I’ve seen that weight loss is more complex.
We may start weight loss for vain reasons, heck, I just wanted to look good naked when I started my journey! But losing weight doesn’t just require physical changes. It requires mental changes as well. Those mental shifts are what actually cause us to accomplish our goals and see long-term results.
The real reason you want to be thin is to find peace in your own body
Like I said, when I started my own journey, I just wanted to look good naked! I had just come off of my third pregnancy and I didn’t recognize my body anymore. I wanted my two-sport college athlete’s body back. I wanted to be thin and beautiful because I had been so confident in who I was when I was skinnier.
I learned as I started to workout again and dial in my nutrition that I could lose all the baby weight and more but I still wouldn’t love myself fully until I found peace with my body. I had to learn to actually care for my body. Truly caring for myself, just like I cared for my kids, taught me how to love my body. I showed it the love it deserved by feeding it properly and exercising.
Once I changed my mindset from depriving my body of the nutrients it needed, to fueling it correctly, I saw the results I craved. I found that the energy I needed to crush it in the gym and to keep up with my kids, just by eating a balanced diet.
The real reason you need to know how many calories you’re eating is to fuel your body appropriately
The purpose of calorie counting isn’t to drastically cut the number of calories we’re eating in a day. The real reason you need to know how many calories you’re eating, is to understand how to properly fuel your body.
In general, we lose weight when we burn more calories than we consume; however, I’ve seen this backfire on people because they don’t really understand when to cut their calories and when to increase them. Yes, sometimes to lose weight you have to increase your calorie intake!!
The body works in cycles, so we need to understand when to change our calorie intake to use those cycles to our benefit. Once we learn how to fuel our bodies during the different cycles, we will be able to reach our health goals!
The real reason you should track your macros is to understand food
I found that tracking my macros was the most efficient way for me to lose weight. I had tried a million other diets and tricks in my pursuit of weight loss, but nothing worked long-term for me.
The reason that nothing else worked before was that it didn’t teach me about food! Macro tracking teaches us how to eat a balanced diet of protein, fat and carbs. Understanding food and how it affects our bodies is a crucial part of living a healthy life.
When I started macro tracking, I started to look and think differently about my food. I learned what food was and why my body needed certain nutrients. I learned what a portion size was and learned what portions sizes I needed.
Understanding what to eat and how much of it to eat taught me what made some foods great choices, some good choices and some were just every now and then choices. My favorite thing macro tracking taught me was that there is no such thing as a never food. All food plays a purpose in our health - physical and mental.
Once you understand food, you can make educated choices! You can change toxic food mindsets and enjoy not only food, but life again!
