The one trick busy mamas need to go from frustrated to hopeful with their weight loss
Have you ever resented how much work it takes to lose weight? Have you thought to yourself, “Why is this so hard for me?” “Why do I have to work so hard to be healthy?” These thoughts are completely normal! Healthy eating is simple, but it’s not necessarily easy. I say this all the time, but it’s so true! Losing weight is about the food, but it’s not really about the food! If you want to go from stuck and frustrated to happy and hopeful about your weight loss journey, then you have to focus on more than just the food!
Most mamas know what is healthy and what isn’t. You know that cookies and cake aren’t good to eat every day, but you do it anyway. You sit down on the couch after a long day of mommin’ and working and cleaning and doing ALL the things and you accidentally pound a whole bag of chips, a few rows of Oreos or a pint of ice cream.
And you don’t know why. You didn’t intend to eat all the food! It just happened.
The truth is that you didn’t eat the food because your body needed the nourishment that only chips, Oreos and ice cream can provide. Your body was seeking comfort - an emotional response - and junk food filled that need.
Your problem isn’t the food you’re eating, as much as it’s WHY you’re eating that food. Eating has become an emotional response, or escape, for you. That’s why all the diets in the past haven’t worked for you! They didn’t address the emotional or mental aspects of your weight gain.
The trick to going from frustrated to hopeful again in your weight loss is changing how you talk about yourself and your journey.
How you talk to yourself is the trick to losing weight
Words play an enormous role in our world. They literally make or break our success, but we rarely pay attention to them.
I want you to think about your encounters with food today. What thoughts did you have about food?
Did you think:
Uggh, I have to make breakfast for the kids.
I hate salads.
I do not want to eat that.
That doesn’t sound good.
I should eat ____ even though I want ____ instead.
Could you feel the negativity in those thoughts? They brought you down and didn’t make you excited at all, right?
Those types of words are called low vibration words and they don’t get you motivated or excited about what you’re eating. They make it feel like a chore!
Low-vibration words keep you stuck
I was talking with my client, Sarah, a few weeks ago, and she expressed to me that she was getting frustrated and annoyed with how hard it was to lose weight. She kept thinking to herself, “Why do I have to do this? Why do I have to pay so much attention to what I put in my mouth?” She wanted to rebel against the systems we had set up.
I told her that we all have an inner child, or really an inner toddler, and when we’re told, “you have to do this. You can’t do that.” our inner toddler goes, “wanna bet?” and it starts to throw a tantrum.
That’s because low-vibration words make us feel restricted. Humans crave freedom - just think about how many wars have been fought over freedom! We want to make decisions for ourselves and when we feel restricted our instinct is to rebel.
Low vibration words look like:
I have to
I need to
I’m supposed to
These words don’t inspire us to do better, so we either stay where we are and feel stuck and frustrated, or worse, they cause us to rebel and go deeper down the hole.
Change to higher vibration words to feel excited about your journey
To get out of those feelings of being stuck and restricted, you need to change the words you’re using.
This doesn’t mean you need to pretend that everything is amazing - for example, if you don’t enjoy running, and all of a sudden start saying “I love running” it isn’t going to make you love it. It’s going to feel fake and forced. Instead, you need to gradually move up from low-vibration words to medium-vibration words and then to high-vibration words so that your transformation feels authentic.
How to use medium vibration words to progress towards weight loss
The first step in going from low-vibration words to medium-vibration words is to shift the “I have to’s” or “I need to’s” to medium-vibration words such as
I get to
I should
I want to
If we build on the running example from earlier, you can change “I have to go running” to “I get to go running.” Did you feel that shift? Running no longer sounds like a chore, but an opportunity.
I talk a lot about being 1% better and this is how you get 1% better! You make a small but achievable shift in how you talk. You’re not trying to lie to yourself or trick yourself, you’re just reframing things in a way that inspires you to do better.
Medium vibration words are going to help, but they’re not going to make everything better all at once.
High vibration words will inspire you to live your best, healthiest life
After you’ve made the jump from the low vibration to the medium vibration and you’ve internalized the shift, you will naturally begin to love how you feel and the actions that got you there.
High-vibration words look like this:
I love to
I can’t wait to
I’m excited to
When you take the time to find what foods and exercises you love, these words come so easy! You start to crave the feeling of feeling good instead of the taste of food or the ease of not working out.
In that same conversation with my client Sarah, when she was telling me that she was frustrated with all the work that it took to eat healthy, she explained that she and her husband had just finished setting up their home gym and that she was so excited to get out there and start working out.
And I could hear in her voice the vibration change! She went from “ugh this is so annoying” to “YAY! I’m so excited to start this”
Working out is difficult, just like eating healthy can be, but the difference between the two difficult things was how Sarah was thinking and talking about them. She used different vibration words and it made all the difference!
I know all of this can sound a little woo-woo, I used to think so too, but I promise it makes a huge difference. I want to challenge you to start taking notice of the words you’re using in regards to your health. Are they low, medium or high-vibration words? And if you’re using low or medium words how does it feel to uplevel them to medium or high-vibration words?
I promise that if you try to uplevel how you speak to yourself, about yourself, or your health that it will make a dramatic difference!
