Stop letting other people dictate your nutrition. You hold the power to feeling good in your body.
Nutrition can be confusing. One minute fat is bad for us, and then the next it’s amazing for us! The health industry jerks us around with every new fad diet that pops up, but the truth is that deep down, we all know what makes us feel good and what hurts our health. When we choose to eat something that doesn’t serve us, we know that it wasn’t a good choice, but we don't necessarily want to admit it. So we look for an excuse.
“I had a healthy dinner planned, but my husband brought pizza home.”
“I was going to workout but my kids got up early and I had to get them ready instead.”
“I was only going to have one drink at happy hour, but my friends kept pushing me to drink more.”
The truth is that we hold the power to feeling good in our bodies but we give it away. We let everyone around us dictate our nutrition and our health instead of sticking up for ourselves and making our goals and needs a priority.
This is especially true with mamas! How many times have you wanted to embark on a health and weight loss journey, but you used time, money or your family’s needs as an excuse to put yourself on the back burner?
Mama, you are denying yourself your power when you do this! You have the power and ability to lead your family in health and happiness, but you have to recognize it and wield it.
Recognize your goals
To regain your power and stop letting other people dictate your health and nutrition you need to acknowledge what you’re working towards.
It could be that you want to reach a certain weight or pants size, but let’s go beyond that as well. Why are you getting healthy?
Do you want to love yourself more? Do you want to be around longer for your family? Do you want to be able to go on adventures with your kids and grandkids?
Now, what do you need to do to accomplish those goals?
Do you need to workout regularly? Are you going to change the way you eat? Will you work on your mindset each day?
Spoiler! The answer should be yes to all of those, regardless of your specific goal!
Now that you know what you’re working on and what you need to do to get there, you need a solid plan. I challenge my Macros Made Easy clients to outline how they will fit these things into their day.
One easy way to incorporate new healthy habits is to include them in your morning routine. If you wake up 30-60 mins earlier, then you can make time for your health! Here’s how you can include mindset, nutrition and exercise into your morning routine.
Kick off your day with mindset work
Read a book
Listen to a devotional or podcast
Journal
Meal plan for the day
Enter your food into MyFitnessPal before you start the day
End mindless eating by having a plan for each meal and snacks throughout the day.
Exercise
Head to the gym before the kids are up so you don’t have to drag them with you
Purchase at-home workout plans or programs so you can cut down time spent getting to and from the gym
Starting your day the right way can empower you to make better choices throughout the rest of the day. It’s a powerful tool you can use to regain your power and take control of your health.
Take responsibility for your choices
In my Macros Made Easy course I talk about the 3P’s: Plan, Prep, Protect. Women usually understand the importance of meal planning and prepping, but protecting is the one that gets away from them. To protect your plans, you have to do something you may not be familiar with: advocating for your needs.
This is where those excuses we talked about earlier come into play. You let your spouse, your kids, your friends, etc, sway you into doing something you don’t want. Most of the time, you have the option to say no, but you choose not to say it.
So really, it isn’t their fault. It’s yours - and mine because Mama, I’ve been here too.
I understand that the people in your life are going to influence your decisions, but you have to own up to the part you play as well.
Just because your family wants pizza for dinner doesn’t mean you have to let it happen! You’re the mom. You get to choose what is best for you and your kids. And if you can’t choose for them, you still get to choose for yourself!
You can choose not to have pizza, even though your husband brought it home. You can choose not to drink, even though your girlfriends want you to.
You get to choose for yourself.
That’s where your power comes from. You are the secret sauce. You are your superpower. You’re the one who gets to make choices for yourself.
Don’t let other people be your scapegoat anymore. Because they aren't looking out for what’s best for you! They’re looking out for what’s best for them. You get to do what’s best for you too.
Reclaim your power
There are two main components to reclaiming your power: showing others how you deserve to be treated and setting up boundaries. These two go hand-in-hand and when used together you can take back your power while still showing your family and friends that you love and care for them.
Every time you allow someone to decide for you, you show them that you’ll give up your needs and wants for theirs. However, when you start to stand up for what you want it shows people that they need to listen and value your opinions.
If you’ve spent years sacrificing your health and happiness for your family, there will be resistance when you start standing up for what you want. Knowing this can help you make the transition smoother for everyone. This is where boundaries come into play.
Start by telling your family and friends that you’re committed to your health. Tell them about the changes you plan on making. And then ask them for their support.
Asking your family to support you is how you allow them to use their power too! No one likes being told what to do, by asking for support or even asking them to go on this journey with you, you’re allowing them to tap into their own power!
This is how you lead your family mama! Every time you take a step towards bettering yourself you start a chain reaction in your family. They see you chase your goals and they realize that they are deserving of chasing their goals too. They see you make healthy choices, and they start making them too. Soon, you’ll be watching not only your kids leading healthy lives, but your grandkids and great-grandkids too.
You have so much more power than you think, Mama. Start using your power to make yourself and your family healthier and happier. Schedule a free discovery call with me and I will lead you through a weight loss journey where you can still enjoy food and family time!
