The one lie that’s holding busy mamas back from accomplishing their health goals
Remember back before corona when we thought we were busy? Now on top of all of our regular mom, wife, worker and all the other titles we wear, most of us have also become teachers! Mama, I completely understand if you’re drowning. I feel like I am too! But I want you to stop telling yourself the lie that you’re too busy to focus on your health.
Mama, your health may be the one thing that helps you survive this crazy busy time! Taking charge of your health will give you the energy to do all the crazy things that pandemic life expects of you. Here is what you need to know about the lie: “I”m too busy” and how to move past it.
What “I’m too busy” really means
What would happen if you replaced the words, “I’m too busy” with “It’s not a priority?” How does that hit you?
The lie, “I’m too busy” is just that a lie. If being healthy was important to you, then you’d make time for it! It’s important that you feed your kids, right? You’re not too busy to make sure they have food, so why is it different for you?
I know that can feel harsh, but it’s so important to realize that we have to make living healthy a priority. We don’t get to be healthy unless we put in the work. If you’re ready to prioritize your health and make daily choices then keep reading because there is a way to be healthy and still enjoy life!
How to create a system that makes healthy living easier
Healthy living doesn’t have to be difficult! When we try to over complicate we end up failing. Healthy living is about four things.
Food
Movement
Water
Sleep
If we can master these four areas, then we will be healthy! Today I just want to talk to you about food. But you can apply these principles to any of those four areas.
Choose a nutritional program that allows for flexibility
There are so many diets out there, like so, so, so many! I’ve tried so many of them! Some worked alright, some didn’t work at all. The biggest issue I found with traditional dieting was the restriction. I wasn’t “allowed” to eat this or eat that. I could keep up with those restrictions for a while, but I just couldn’t do it long-term.
When you’re looking for your own nutritional plan, you need to assess what’s important to you. Are you a carb-o-holic? Then a low carb diet probably isn’t going to work for you! I know you’re thinking, but if I give up carbs, I’ll lose weight. That might be true to a point, but if you’re told you can’t eat carbs are you going to be able to cut them out forever? No matter how much self-control you have, you’re going to want a carb at some point.
After many different diets, I discovered macro tracking, or as it’s more aptly named, flexible dieting. I love macro tracking because I wasn’t told what I could or couldn’t eat. I was taught about what my body needed and I was “allowed” to eat whatever I wanted. This was the key for me! I was able to eat the foods I loved along with the super healthy foods my body needed!
Create a plan that works for you
Creating a plan is about more than just meal planning. A nutritional plan is the first step in creating a healthy lifestyle. As I mentioned before, you’ll want to make sure that your new plan includes movement, sleep and water in addition t a solid nutritional plan.
Your new health plan has to fit into your life! Mainly because you actually are really busy! If you try to fit in an hour-long workout every day but only actually have 20 minutes to spend on your workout, then it’s not going to stick! Be realistic about what you can do. As you grow in your journey, you may begin to prioritize your health over other choices.
Set aside time in your week for these things:
Meal planning
Grocery shopping
Meal prepping
Exercising
Quiet time/meditation/journaling
Sleeping for 7-9 hours a night
It may help to set up a schedule for yourself so that you can get into your new routine. Once you have your routine, you can play around with it, but while you’re building these habits a solid schedule will be so helpful!
Prioritize and protect your plan
Finally, it’s time to really prioritize your health by protecting your plan! I talk about this all of the time because it’s the easiest to get off track. We’ve been programmed to believe that if we mess up once, everything is lost and we are now failures. This. Is. Not. True.
Life happens. You may miss a day at the gym because you have to take your kid to the dentist. You might have to grab Chick-Fil-A on the way home after a full afternoon and evening of driving your kids to soccer practice and hitting up the PTA meeting. You may get a full night’s sleep because you’re up taking care of a scared or sick little. That doesn’t mean you’re a failure! It means you’re a mom. You have a lot of responsibilities.
But, you need to try and protect your plan as often as you can! You don’t need to drink every Saturday night with your girlfriends. You can ask to switch things up and find a way to hangout that fits into your plan. You don’t have to stuff your face at your nephew’s birthday party just because everyone else is. You can eat before or bring your own food! You can live life, have fun, and stick to your plan.
